Description Crains Chicago Business is seeking a highly skilled Chief Copy Editor to lead our copy desk, collaborate with the design hub, and manage print and digital production. You will work in our Chicago newsroom (hybrid schedule). The successful candidate will bring a wealth of experience in overseeing both print and digital copy processes, demonstrating a keen eye for detail, strong editing skills, a keen understanding of Chicago business and political news, and the ability to navigate the evolving media landscape. At Crain’s, copy editors are regarded as full-fledged journalists and partners in the entire editorial process, not simply proofreaders. Our copy editors are the reader’s advocate, working side-by-side with editors, reporters and designers to improve the end product.   • Demonstrated experience in overseeing a copy desk, encompassing both print and digital editing, from stories to page approval, addressing production issues.
  • Excellent situational awareness to manage multiple products and pages across various platforms with varying deadlines.
  • Ability to triage workload, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines, balancing both print and digital demands.
  • Strong editing skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with both print and digital page design software; InDesign experience is a significant plus.
  • Proficiency in content management systems and general technology; technophobes need not apply.
  • Ability to take charge and lead effectively while maintaining a collaborative environment and a culture of teamwork.
  • Strong understanding of Chicago business and political news; experience working in a newsroom with a Chicago or business news focus strongly preferred.

This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay. Pay Transparency Disclosure: The estimated salary range for this position is $70,000 to $80,000. The final salary offering will take into account a wide range of factors, including experience, accomplishments and location. The salary range provided should not be considered as a salary limit or cap.
