POSITION SUMMARY:

This position performs a variety of duties in support of the library including shelving library materials, processing new library cards, and checking books and materials in and out.

PRIMARY JOB TASKS:

  • Greets visitors; answers telephone and e-mail requests; assists customers or refers to appropriate personnel.
  • Assists patrons in the location, referral, and selection of materials and related information.
  • Conducts circulation activities including charging and discharging materials, accepts payments for fines, lost and damaged items.
  • Issues and renews library cards for patrons; ensures patrons accounts are accurate and up to date.
  • Sorts books and audio-visual materials after they are checked in; loads items on carts and places in order before shelving.
  • Shelves materials returned to or used within the library.
  • Checks shelves for accuracy; shifts materials on shelves as needed.
  • Straightens shelves.
  • Empties book drop; sorts and discharges materials; and loads carts.
  • Assists with closing duties; ensures all customers have exited library, picks up materials; straightens furniture.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the staff, supervisor, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both written and verbal form.
  • Must be proficient in workplace English and spelling.
  • Ability to read City policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence; SDS sheets, safety manuals, maps, etc.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
