Job DescriptionHVAC/Mechanical Estimator

The HVAC/Mechanical Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and comprehensive cost and labor estimates for complex mechanical construction projects, including heating, process piping, and sheet metal fabrication/installation. This role requires exceptional analytical skills, deep technical knowledge, and the ability to identify cost-saving opportunities and manage deadlines effectively within a fast-paced environment.

Location: Carrollton, TX 100% On-Site

Compensation: $95,000-115,000 plus annual bonus

Schedule: M-F 8-5

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare comprehensive cost and labor estimates for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), process piping, and sheet metal trades using prescribed forms, industry-recognized techniques, and company procedures.
  • Analyze blueprints, construction drawings, specifications, and other documentation to establish a complete project scope and identify potential risks or benefits.
  • Develop competitive and accurate HVAC cost estimates that maximize bid win potential.
  • Prepare and finalize proposal letters, scope qualifications, exclusions, and final pricing documents in collaboration with the Business Development team.
  • Conduct detailed review of project documents to identify Value Engineering opportunities, potential competitive edges, and technical challenges.
  • Assess final estimates against similar past projects to ensure accuracy, reasonable material and labor use, and total value compliance.
  • Review architectural, structural, and civil documents to understand their impact on the mechanical and plumbing scope of work.
  • Monitor all project addenda, scope changes, and bid forms to ensure timely and accurate incorporation into the estimate.
  • Track opportunities with vendors, subcontractors, and customers throughout the bid process.
  • Provide expert advice on vendor/subcontractor selection and manage the process of obtaining and reviewing competitive pricing quotes.
  • Review all vendor/subcontractor proposals to verify technical compliance with project specifications.
  • Assist in negotiating contracts and change orders as needed.
  • Coordinate and assist with the seamless project turnover from Estimating to the Project Management and Field teams.
  • Organize and maintain estimating project files and documentation in a clear, coherent, and auditable manner.
  • Oversee and maintain the department's bid database.
  • Continuously monitor and maintain current technical knowledge of piping, plumbing, and sheet metal estimating and installation practices and procedures.

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Construction Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in business development or commercial/industrial estimating is strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience with Commercial HVAC estimating and/or installation practices is a significant advantage.

Skills and Abilities

  • Must be exceptionally detail-oriented while employing strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively under pressure and consistently meet strict deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills, requiring a high degree of thoroughness and follow-up.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat/Reader.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills for technical proposal writing and negotiation.
  • Physical ability to sit/stand for extended periods (8+ hours) each day.
