Job Description
Job DescriptionAccounting Manager / Controller - Hybrid Hybrid – Houston (Heights Area) | Up to $190,000 + Discretionary Bonus
A well-capitalized, independent upstream oil & gas company with a large, established onshore footprint in Texas and Louisiana (900+ producing wells) is seeking an exceptional Accounting Manager / Controller to serve as its senior hands-on accounting leader. This position reports directly to the CFO and functions as the company’s top accounting professional.
This is a true “working controller” role. There are no direct reports. The individual in this seat must be capable of personally executing the work—not delegating it. From daily cash activity to audit support, this professional will own the entire accounting lifecycle and serve as a critical business partner to executive leadership.
The company offers a best-in-class culture, long-term stability, and a comprehensive benefits package. The position is hybrid, with three days in-office and two remote.
The Ideal Candidate
10+ years of progressive upstream oil & gas accounting experience
Background within an independent E&P environment is required
Deep technical accounting expertise with a strong command of GAAP in an upstream context
Advanced Excel skills with the ability to build and maintain complex schedules and models
Experience with OGSYS and DocVue is strongly preferred
Demonstrated success operating autonomously in a high-responsibility, hands-on role
Polished communicator with the credibility to partner directly with executive leadership
This role is best suited for a seasoned upstream accounting professional who enjoys being “in the details,” thrives in an environment without layers of staff, and takes ownership of outcomes from start to finish.
Key Responsibilities
Annual
Lead coordination and support for all year-end and interim audit activities, including preparation of schedules and direct interaction with external auditors
Prepare and/or oversee DD&A and impairment schedules following receipt of reserve reports
Generate, distribute, and electronically file Forms 1099 for vendors and revenue owners
Provide data to property tax consultants; review final renditions and calculate monthly ad valorem accruals
Prepare and compile information for annual insurance renewals, including control of well, general liability, D&O, and property coverage
Monthly & Quarterly
Prepare DD&A calculations
Produce accurate, timely monthly and quarterly financial reporting packages for executive review
Perform cost allocations and prepare/post related journal entries (field expenses, insurance, and shared costs)
Oversee revenue accounting, including uploading OGSYS revenue entries, volume allocations, and severance tax tracking
Prepare and post journal entries for depreciation, interest, payroll, wire transfers, and other cash activity
Reconcile all bank accounts and maintain supporting schedules for AR, prepaid assets, notes payable, accrued liabilities, and other balance sheet accounts
Weekly
Generate vendor payments and manage positive pay uploads
Review, approve, and post vendor invoices
Participate in leadership and operational meetings
Daily
Manage cash activity: review bank transactions, update cash schedules, and reconcile to the general ledger
Monitor and respond to operational, financial, and accounting inquiries
This opportunity is designed for a high-caliber upstream accounting professional who wants ownership, visibility, and influence. It offers the autonomy of a solo seat, the strategic access of reporting directly to the CFO, and the stability of a mature, well-run independent operator.Company Description
