Position Summary

The Assistant University Counsel (Attorney) reports to the Office of University Counsel (OUC) and provides legal services to the University, including reviewing, drafting, negotiating and managing a wide variety of contracts and transactional documents such as services agreements, non‑disclosure agreements, software licenses, information technology agreements, consulting agreements, property‑related agreements, executive search firm agreements, performance and speaker agreements, exhibition and equipment loan agreements, digital education contracts, revenue‑generating arrangements, and other related agreements.

The role also provides legal support to Procurement Services by advising on state procurement laws, strategic sourcing, vendor management and other procurement operations. The Attorney assists with contract administration, updating contracting playbooks, reviewing contract provisions, and supplying general legal advice to the unit. Legal research is conducted to provide advice on contractual matters and applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and University policies.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Relevant post‑Baccalaureate degree (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience;
  • Alternatively, a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) with five years or greater of relevant experience may be accepted.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Graduation from an accredited school of law.
  • Be a licensed attorney in good standing in North Carolina or able to become one within one year of joining the University.
  • Minimum of two years of relevant legal experience.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Knowledge of the law relevant to higher education.
  • Ability to use effective approaches for choosing a course of action, developing appropriate solutions, and reaching conclusions.
  • Sufficient knowledge of client programs, organization, and culture to provide appropriate advice and counsel.
  • Ability to develop plans to accomplish unit objectives and requirements.
