We are seeking an ambitious independent contractor who can make use of our kitchen and help us provide regular dining options for members and guests several evenings each week.
We are open to negotiation, and owners of existing businesses are encouraged to submit proposals.
The Role
Our kitchen, which is located on the second floor of our clubhouse, is fully licensed and equipped, but has not been in daily use since the pandemic temporarily shuttered the club.
We are seeking a self-motivated chef who could make use of our space as a prep kitchen and/or food delivery hub for your business. In return for regular access to the kitchen, you will be expected to offer a concise menu of bar food for sale to members and guests in the club bar at a minimum for 3 to 4 evenings each week.

Compensation & Details
The kitchen is equipped with a commercial grade gas oven, stove, an ice machine, refrigerator, and flatware & silverware. There is a freezer in an office next to the kitchen.
The club is busiest during mid-week events and late at night, or "after hours," Mid-week events are public and are mostly frequented by full club members – typically from 6:30 to 10:30pm. The club sees late night business from midnight to 3am.
The club seeks modest, negotiable rent to offset licensing and maintenance costs.

The Pen and Pencil Club is one of Philadelphia’s oldest and most storied institutions. It’s a members-only journalism social club and late-night bar that has been in operation since 1892, and is open seven days a week.
Per our charter, the club is overseen by a volunteer board of working journalists and operates under Pennsylvania’s private club licensing, which allows us to serve drinks beyond standard bar hours but limits typical customer access to members and their guests.
Our membership is divided between journalists and associate members – “friends of journalism,” who are largely folks from the service and hospitality industry who find their way to us after their own shifts end. We host several events each week, which are open to the public, and do a robust after-hours business at our bar.
