ABOUT THE POSITION

The Stanislaus County District Attorney office is seeking qualified law students for the position of Deputy District Attorney I Trainee. Candidates must be certified by the State Bar of California. As an attorney trainee, you will work under a Chief Deputy District Attorney and handle a range of misdemeanor criminal cases, including driving under the influence, domestic violence, drug possession, theft, weapons charges, and prostitution. Responsibilities include discovery, law and motion filings, settlement negotiations, trial preparation, plea discussions, witness interviews, evidence evaluation, and presentations.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Research and write legal documents for misdemeanor cases.
  • Prepare and present facts, law, and arguments orally and in written submissions.
  • Conduct witness interviews and examine evidence.
  • Participate in case reviews, trial preparation, and plea negotiations.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement, prosecutors, investigators, victim advocates, paralegals, and clerical staff.
TRAINING AND COMPENSATION

An Attorney I Trainee earns 15% less than the first step of the Attorney I series. Trainees are appointed to the first step of the salary range for the unclassified service and may be upgraded to a probationary Attorney I appointment after completing the training period and acquiring the required qualifications. Appointment duration is one year, extendable up to two years with minimum qualifications.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current law school graduate awaiting California State Bar Exam results, or awaiting to take the exam.
  • Current enrollment in an ABA‑accredited or California State Bar‑accredited law school with good academic standing.
  • Eligible for certification as a Certified Law Clerk under California Rules of Court, Rule 9.42.
  • Successful completion of core legal coursework, including legal research, writing and foundational law courses.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Three to six months of employment or volunteer experience in a District Attorney's Office, Public Defender's Office, or criminal law/prosecution setting.
