About the Role:

We are seeking a strategic and hands-on Electrical & Controls Engineer – EV Battery Welding Systems to lead the design, integration, optimization, and ongoing support of advanced micro-welding equipment used in high-volume EV battery manufacturing. This role focuses on delivering safe, repeatable, and high-quality welding solutions for high-voltage flex circuits supporting battery cells, modules, and packs.

The ideal candidate is an innovative, data-driven engineer with deep experience in electrical and controls systems, a strong commitment to safety and quality, and the ability to thrive in fast-paced EV launch environments. This is a hybrid role based in the greater Detroit area and part of a corporate engineering organization.

What You’ll Do:

Electrical & Controls Engineering

  • Design, specify, and troubleshoot electrical and controls systems for high-voltage flex circuit micro-welding equipment, including laser and resistance welding platforms
  • Develop and maintain electrical schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and I/O documentation for automated manufacturing systems
  • Integrate PLCs, motion control, laser controllers, HMIs, safety PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens), and industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus)
  • Ensure compliance with NFPA 79, IEC, UL, and internal high-voltage manufacturing standards

High-Voltage Micro-Welding Process Support

  • Support electrical and controls aspects of micro-welding processes for battery tabs, busbars, voltage sense tabs, and module interconnects
  • Support welding of copper, aluminum, nickel, and plated materials, including dissimilar metal joints
  • Interface with laser sources (fiber and disk), beam delivery optics, galvo scanners, various wavelengths (blue, red, green), and resistance welding power supplies
  • Implement and support real-time weld monitoring and feedback systems (current, voltage, energy, displacement, plume monitoring, vision, pyrometry)
  • Support weld validation and quality requirements per ISO 13919, ISO 6520, AWS, and customer-specific battery standards

Battery Safety & Compliance

  • Support electrical safety requirements in high-energy EV battery manufacturing environments
  • Design and validate Class 4 laser safety systems, including enclosures, interlocks, LOTO, light curtains, and safety PLC architectures
  • Ensure proper grounding, isolation, and ESD controls critical to battery production
  • Support compliance with IATF 16949, ISO 9001, and customer-specific EV battery quality and safety requirements

Manufacturing, Launch & Commissioning

  • Lead electrical and controls support for FAT/SAT, equipment commissioning, production launches, and ramp-up
  • Provide hands-on troubleshooting to minimize downtime, scrap, and weld-related defects
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on OEE, FPY, defect reduction, and equipment reliability
  • Partner with maintenance teams to develop PM standards, troubleshooting guides, and training materials

Quality, Traceability & Data Systems

  • Support PFMEA, DFMEA (as applicable), Control Plans, and Cp/Cpk activities related to welding processes
  • Implement weld data collection, traceability, and MES integration tied to serial numbers
  • Participate in structured problem-solving (8D, A3, root cause analysis) for quality or reliability issues
  • Support PPAP submissions, customer audits, and launch readiness reviews

Cross-Functional & Supplier Collaboration

  • Collaborate with battery process, mechanical, automation, quality, and reliability engineering teams
  • Interface with laser OEMs, welding equipment suppliers, system integrators, and vision vendors
  • Provide technical support to global manufacturing sites as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field
  • 5+ years of electrical engineering experience in automotive or EV battery manufacturing
  • Hands-on experience with laser and/or resistance micro-welding systems in high-volume production
  • Proficiency with EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, Allen-Bradley and/or Siemens PLCs, and industrial networks
  • Experience with laser systems, welding power supplies, safety systems, functional safety, weld monitoring, vision, and data acquisition
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and data-driven problem-solving skills
  • Effective communicator in cross-functional, fast-paced launch environments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting EV battery cell, module, or pack manufacturing
  • Understanding of battery architectures (prismatic, cylindrical, pouch)
  • Knowledge of current collector assemblies and battery tab micro-welding (Cu-Al, Cu-Ni, Al-Al)
  • Laser safety certification or experience managing Class 4 laser systems
  • Experience with MES integration, weld traceability, and data analytics

Physical, Safety & Travel Requirements:

  • Ability to work in office and manufacturing environments
