UPMC Hamot is seeking a Professional Staff Nurse to join the Labor & Delivery team!

Schedule Requirements:

  • Day and night availability required
  • Rotating shifts required
  • On‑call participation required

Position Purpose

The Professional Staff Nurse (RN) is a key member of the care delivery team and is responsible for setting standards for the level and quality of patient care. This role carries responsibility, authority, and accountability for nursing care delivery.

The Professional Staff Nurse manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the use of independent judgment, effective communication, and collaboration with interdisciplinary team members. This role encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration, and supervision, while establishing and maintaining strong relationships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve desired outcomes across the continuum of care. The Professional Staff Nurse demonstrates a commitment to the community and the nursing profession.

  • Supports the professional development of students and colleagues and may serve as a preceptor.

  • Applies the nursing process within the framework of Relationship‑Based Care to foster a healing environment.
  • Develops daily goals and individualized plans of care in partnership with patients, addressing clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual needs.

  • Communicates patient status clearly to care team members and advocates for appropriate changes in care and unit practices.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide age‑appropriate care and interact effectively with patients served by the assigned unit.
  • Knowledge of principles of growth and development across the lifespan, with the ability to assess and interpret patient data to meet age‑specific care needs in accordance with department policies and procedures.
  • Zero to two (0–2) years of nursing experience required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, advanced practice providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients and families.
  • Ability to work productively in a complex healthcare environment, manage multiple and changing priorities, and operate specialized equipment.
  • Demonstrates good clinical judgment with strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem‑solving skills related to patient care.
  • Ability to apply and lead others in the use of the nursing process.
  • Physical requirements include mobility, visual and manual dexterity, and stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.

Flexible Scheduling Opportunities

UPMC offers a variety of flexible scheduling options. In addition to traditional rotating and flexible shifts, special programs are available that allow nurses to work primarily night shifts or weekend shifts with premium pay differentials.

  • Employees hired into or transitioning to these programs must have at least 6 months of nursing experience to qualify.
  • Orientation may be required during regular business hours.
  • Candidates interested in these programs should notify their recruiter during the interview process.

Licensure, Certifications & Clearances
  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensure:
    • Current licensure in the state where the facility is located OR
    • Multistate license issued by a participating Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state
    • RNs working under an out‑of‑state NLC license who establish residency in the facility’s state must obtain in‑state licensure within 60 days of residency change.
  • Temporary Practice Permit (TPP) accepted for Graduate Nurses.
  • Graduate Nurses must complete the RN licensure examination:
    • Within 6 months of hire OR
    • Within 1 year of graduation, whichever comes first
      Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination or demotion at the discretion of the business unit.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR Certification:
    • Must meet American Heart Association (AHA) standards
    • Includes didactic instruction and skills demonstration
    • Required within 30 days of hire
  • UPMC‑approved national nursing certification preferred
